Been On A Break

My blog has suffered from my long neglect.  Lots of exciting things have happened since I posted my latest work but don't worry I am not going to bore you with the details.  I am simply posting my latest acrylics on canvas.  This group of work is inspired by music in the broadest sense.  This new direction in style is influence by a weekend workshop titled "Big Fat Art Weekend" lead by Jane Davies.  Would love to hear your thoughts on these latest paintings.

Small Abstracts

Acrylic paintings on small canvases is my present focus.   I have always felt that abstract paintings had to be large to have a strong impact.  I have learned that is not the case.  I am loving this new challenge.

Working at the Lake On a Rainy Weekend

Thanksgiving at Lake Eufaula is wet and dreary.  It is really perfect conditions to get out the art materials and play.  Cold, rain, fire in the fireplace, football on TV, and wine is a great recipe for creating.  Below are 4 of my latest 5" x 7" mixed media pieces.

I haven't painted for a couple of months.  I was painting larger and larger canvases as I felt my abstract paintings had to be large in order to be effective.  Living between my home and my lake house presented logistical problems with space, availability of materials, and transportation of supplies.  EXCUSES EXCUSES!  My mentor and teacher Lyn ignored my whining, forced me to get out paint and small paper and whipped me into shape proving that SMALL abstract paintings can have a LARGE impact.  I have begun working on a series of SMALL paintings (5"x7") works.  I have completed 3.

Recycled Canvas

At our Lake Place in Eufaula OK there are no art supply stores.  The nearest place to purchase materials is in Muskogee at a Hobby Lobby (no Michaels near).  Out of frustration I began to visit the local junk stores and  purchased a couple lovely (HA!) painted and framed canvases and renewed their life with thick gesso and a new painting.  Below is the first of my transformations on a 36"x36'" framed canvas.

Lost and Found

Since my last post of the paintings I finished after returning from Boston I have been both "lost and found" which is probably always the case if you are an artist exploriing new directions.  I worked on one canvas for many days painting and repainting until I was so frustrated I turned it to the wall and went back to working on water color paper continuing to pursue my "Fractured Poem" series.  After completing 2 works on paper the canvas called to me again.  A brought out a new clean white canva ( 24"x24") and started a new painting.  It went fairly quickly and I felt energized by the painting.  Softer, lighter, looser, and more free.
